Description:

The subject of this icon corresponds to a passage in the Holy Scripture where Jesus Christ has a conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well of Jacob, which was particularly revered by the Samaritan people in the historical region of Israel.

In the central composition of the icon, you can see the well itself. To the right of the well stands a woman holding a bucket, and to the left sits Christ. His gestures suggest that he is speaking. Behind Christ, one of the Apostles is depicted.

This iconography in Ukrainian art originated from Dutch graphics. Ivan Rutkovych, for example, used a similar icon in the Zhovkva iconostasis (1697-1699).
